REGULATING THE QUANTITY & QUALITY OF THOUGHTS

Sunanda (Dubai, U.A.E):

Q) What is a thought wave? How to control/regulate the quantity and quality of thoughts?

Manish ji's reply:

[As understood by me]

A) Take an example of a fast-flowing river. To sip a handful of water of it, if we try to walk into the centre of the river, we will be washed away with the gushing flow. So, it will be better to sip a little from the banks. Similarly, mind is a flow of thoughts. Trying to control the flow of thoughts by trying not to think about it, will only lead to a flood of thoughts. The solution is to pick up a thought and work upon it diligently to give it a conclusion. A better evolved mind will be able to visualize a thought wave completely and direct the organs of action to work in an integrated manner.

Sunanda: But then, what is the force behind it? isn’t it kaamna or desire?

Manishji: As long as we have desires, likes, dislikes, our own wills and plans, we will act prompted by our desires. And all our actions will fall under the governance of societal, national, religious laws etc. Unlike the actions of yogi (though under the same law governance), are not desire prompted, as He is above the arena of all likes-dislikes of heat-cold at the physical level, pleasure-pain at the mental level, insult-appreciation at the intellectual level.

Sunanda: How can we come to work in this manner?

Manishji: Lord Krishna explains the secret of ‘Karm Yog’ in Sreemad Bhagawad Geeta. Work as per your Dharm and perform all your duties applying all the mental resources wholeheartedly, with full alertness and presence of mind, without getting attached to the fruits of action or over thinking about the end result. Perform work diligently without stopping in the middle or changing the course halfway due to preyas. Shreyas must always be kept in mind and for this, ‘DETACHMENT’ is the key.
