Man is motivated by his desires. All his life, he strives hard and finds comfort in fulfilling them. He derives pleasure out of his achievements and is pained by failures. His desires are his priority, more important than other's desires and needs. He is born of desires, lives in those and dies with many more! Thus, each birth is the outcome of his desires. This is the vicious cycle of transmigration being created out of the desires accumulated through innumerable births. Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda says – “The inward tremors are experienced only when any burning desire has conquered us completely.”

Who wants to extinguish this fire of his desires? Everyone seems to be eager to satiate the desires; seldom someone wants to exhaust them, but neither of these is ever possible! As per the Shastras you can neither exhaust all your desires nor can you satiate all of them; because, desires are like fire. They flame up in both ways; like putting fuel into the fire. If you want to extinguish the fire, then stop fuelling it! Therefore, they advise us to stop entertaining our desires. But, suppressing the desires will have adverse effect; in due course they find their way and burst out like volcanic eruption, bringing disaster, damage and destruction to you. Very dangerous indeed!

The solution is to extinguish the flames of the burning desires tactfully. Firstly, stop fuelling the fire of desires by diverting the thoughts towards the Higher. Keep doing this until very few, and that too, preferably only worthy and selfless desires, remain knocking your mind's door. Next, engage your mind in pursuing a definite Higher Goal. Be regular and sincere in pursuing it with clear understanding and utmost efficiency. Give your mind no scope to get back into the entertaining channel of worthless desires. Work it out wholeheartedly and make it a matter of interest and joy for yourself, and your mind will not desire to entertain the fleeting desires any more. Ultimately, extinguish the fire of desires with the flow of Right Knowledge. Then nourish your mind with the nectar-like cooling dewdrops of Supreme devotion. Your mind will enjoy to work out the planned activity that is based upon your selected target. It will be able to remain calm and creative. You, the sole owner of such a quiet mind, will enjoy every moment of this earned freedom from the dragging slavery of your own dreadful mind!
